Budgeting Loans

Budgeting loans can help with essential lump sum expenses which are difficult to budget for when you are living on means-tested benefits. Budgeting loans have to be paid back to the social fund, but they are interest-free. This means you only have to pay back the amount you are awarded. You won’t get a budgeting loan just because you are eligible to apply. The decision will be made following a review of your circumstances.

APPLY ONLINE FOR A BUDGETING LOAN

How Long Does A Budgeting Loan Take

What is a Budgeting Loan? An interest free loan available to help people to spread the cost of one-off expenses over a longer period.
Eligibility Must currently be in receipt of IS, JSA (income based) ESA (Income Related) or Pension Credit; and throughout the past 26 wks:

  • have been in receipt of IS, JSA (income based) ESA (Income Related) or Pension Credit; or
  • have been the partner of someone in receipt of IS, JSA (income based) ESA (Income Related) or Pension Credit.
  • Breaks in entitlement to a qualifying benefit of less than 28 days are ignored.

NB: anyone can apply for a Loan. A Decision Maker will decide whether or not they are eligible for a loan.

Features A budgeting loan can be used for:

  • Furniture or Household Items.
  • Clothing and Footwear.
  • Rent in advance or removal expenses.
  • Home Improvements, maintenance or security.
  • Travelling Expenses.
  • Help with looking for or starting work (including childcare costs)
  • Repaying Hire Purchase (HP) or other debts that have been taken out to pay for any of the above.

(The applicant does not need to list specific items or services in their application but they will have to say how much they wish to borrow.)

How much can be borrowed?

The amount that can be borrowed depends on whether the applicant is:

  • Single;
  • One of a couple; or
  • Either single or one of a couple with one or more child.

The final amount depends on:

  • The amount outstanding on any previous Social Fund loans.
  • The amount of any capital/savings the applicant has.
  • minimum award is £100.

Repaying the loan

Repayments can either be:

  • Deducted automatically from benefit in payment; or
  • Paid directly by the customer at an agreed amount (depending on applicant’s income and expenditure).
How to apply
  • BL applications can be made by completing an Application Form and posting it to a local Jobcentre Plus office.
  • When completed the form can be posted to your local Jobcentre Plus.
Dissatisfied with BL decision? If the customer is dissatisfied with their BL decision:

A review request should be made in writing within 28 days of the date of the decision stating the reasons why the applicant is dissatisfied with the decision. Customers can apply to the IRS

What is the maximum amount of money allowed to be taken from your benefit to repay a budgeting loan? I presume, it will only be the job seekers allowance that the amount will be based on, and not any child benefit or child tax that you may have been awarded for your child?!

Reply

Social Fund January 12, 2011 at 10:11 pm

There is no ACTUAL maximum, however 20% of income ( all income) is generally as high as they go. You can write in and ask for them to lower your repayments , just make sure you list all if your income and outgoings – showing a deficit…

when you have signed the form agreeing to the loan, how long does it take until the money goes into your bank account?

Hi,

The general turnaround is 5-10 days, may be worth calling after 4 days to make sure your application has been received

I was on income based jobseekers allowance from September 18 untill November 18 2010, however had to stop to have my baby, I immediately applied for Income support and received payments from the 23 of November. I have applied for a budgeting loan a week now and haven’t received a reply has yet. My concern is whether the 5 day gap in payments will affect my loan application, I didn’t actually start receiving the income support payment until late january, however the payments where backdated to the 23 of November. I’m moving shortly with my little boy and will need some furniture and such. Please let me know if the 5 day gap will be an issue in my claim although it wasn’t until jan it got backdated to that date. If the time on jobseekers is added with up untill now its past 26 days since, I’ve been on qualifying benefits. Thanks for your advice in advance

The Nice Guy January 18, 2012 at 7:07 pm

Social Fund disregard breaks in entitlement of 28 days or less. In other words the five days you were not claiming will have no effect on your eligability to apply

Hi,
Are there any circumstances in which a budgeting loan can be paid over the counter? I waited 3 weeks for a decision, have got the loan but now theyre telling me will be another week to ten days before I actually get the cash in my bank account?

Reply

Social Fund April 11, 2011 at 6:46 am

unfortunately not- the only option is to have it paid into an account, after they have received and processed your acceptance letter to the repayment rate.
you could call them each day after bout the 7th working day and ask that they make a FEP ( same day bank payment) as opposed to a BACS that takes 3 days but thats all you can do to speed things up.

Hi, im currently applying for a budgeting loan as i need bedroom furniture for my 6 month old son, he is currently in a carry cot (off his pram) and no longer fits in it and i have no cot or other furniture for his room. Also i need a new garden fence as the one i have is broke and my daughter keeps getting out of the garden. Would these reasons be accepted or is there no point in applying?

Reply

Social Fund April 11, 2011 at 6:48 am

The cot – YES, this is a classic example of an item that a loan can be paid for, however the fence is a 50/50, unless you can show that their would be a clear risk to health and safety if it were not provided AND that their is no-one else who would be liable to pay for this, I.e. your landlord, housing association, or council.

Reply

sarah October 12, 2011 at 10:18 pm

Hya just like to say you can apply for a budget loan if you need it for clothing, house hold stuff and travel and extra.

Reply

FTMUM24KIDS April 13, 2011 at 9:11 am

I DO BELIEVE THAT THE FENCE PANELS WOULD FALL UNDER THE CATEGORY OF HOME IMPROVEMENTS AND SECURITY OF THE HOME, JUST TICK THE BOX THAT SOUNDS MOST LIKE IT.
THE GREAT THING ABOUT THESE LOANS IS THAT YOU’RE NOT ASKED TO BE SPECIFIC , I’D BE ALL DAY LISTING MY NEEDS! YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO SHOW/PROVE WHAT YOU NEED THE MONEY FOR OR WHO IS LIABLE TO PAY FOR IT, JUST AS LONG AS YOU CAN AFFORD TO LIVE WITH THE REPAYMENTS.

You can never be guaranteed a loan, hover your circumstances seem to fit with successful applications that we have seen. A few things to mention.

We think it very unlikely that you will get help whilst at your mums, so make sure your new tennany has started and inform income support og your new address as this will validate your move.
If your 2 year old is crawling, make sure you state this, and also give detail about the flooring that you have
Also make a note of all the things you will need, pots, pans , towels, plates, bed g, window dressings and apply for them all together.
Be realistic about prices, the social fund will price each item you apply for- possibly using the argues catalogue- so don’t quote John Lewis prices!

Apply and get a formal decision but we think that you stand a good chance.

I would suggest you stay at home with your family and enter on a college course that will improve your future job prospects instead of spreading your legs for any tom dick and harry for the sole purpose of maximising your benefit entitlement and expecting then tax payer to foot the bill. Hi SF,

Whats the mximum a single male can receive from such a Budgeting Loan?

If its less than the £1500 then why dont they you that on the form you fill in.

Plus how many budgeting loan applications can you make ina single year or tax year.

Could possibly be facing bancruptcy without one. My overdraft charges of £31 a month Plus others takes up a sizeable amount of my benefits (6 months on them starting my own business soon). I have telephoned the bank but they do not want too refund any charges. I even mentioned I am on a low income. But no… On Feb 1st 2012 I will be charged £81 in fees, for being over my overdraft by £1 in December. I wasnt even aware I had done this at all, Halifax charges £5 a day for being over your overdraft. The Halifax really do take the Pee!. Thanks in advance.

Cheers.

No they cant do that, what you need to do is ask for a QB42/QB52 form to be completed over the phone ( lost payment statement) and they should look into the whereabouts of the original payment and WILL replace if their error, and MAY replace if yours.

They do have access to your I.S account and prefer to pay into an account if possible, so NO they wont send your form back as long as its signed.. and should pay into your account.

I applied for approx £900, for a stair carpet and bedroom carpet, (as my neighbour is complaining about noise on the floorboards!) washing machine repair(£80) as laundrette costs £30 per week, a cooker as not working at all….. I was awarded £450. I would have been hard pushed to purchase all items for £900 but didn’t want to appear greedy. Genuine claim. I have purchased a cooker and have £200 for carpet……..I put away £2 a week, do not drink or smoke, unable to work, so it will probably be 10 yrs or so before I call the carpet company!

Reply

Social Fund June 11, 2011 at 11:52 am

The offer you were made was based on prices that the decision maker found or was quoted for the items that you had applied for..

Many people apply for things and inflate prices, or simply wish to shop at John Lewis. however the Loan is for desperate need and immediate emergency, and its assumed that if their is a cheeper alternative, this would be used.

Reply

ickle bunny November 23, 2011 at 6:05 pm

In all fairness, if you go to carpet right you can get off cuts of carpets, and if in so desperate need does it matter the colour or pattern so yes, for bedroom and stairs they would see max of £200 fair, and a cooker can be picked up from argos ect for £120, add your £80 washing machine repair, total £400, you got £450 so your quids in in there eyes, it may not seem fair to you, but to them it is

The ability to be awarded some help should still remain, based on your entitlement as long as you have had no breaks in your 26 week claim. Your partner may have worked on the RELEVANT tax years (im guessing 08/09 and 09/10) and earned enough to qualify for cont based jsa?

Hi, at the moment im living with my mum, brother and son in a 3 bedroom house, its cramped and ive been put down as homeless. My mum wants me out as soon as possible. Im in the middle of looking at a few private houses, can i apply for a budgeting loan and community care grant at the same time, for a deposit and furniture because i literally have nothing to my name? I also need a cot for my baby because he is too big for the moses basket. I already had a maternity loan btw. Write back asap. Thx

YOu can’t be awarded a deposit by the social fund, you may get help from your council, however the social fund can help with rent in advance if you have found a property AND have secured a bond, then depending on your benefit status you may be able to get a budgeting loan or CCG once you have moved in.

Crisis loans use a national number, however CCG’s and BL’s are dealt with by specific benefit centres- call the national social fund number and ask them to check beaded on your post code- they will then give you the correct number

We applied for a budgeting loan and got the letter through today offering us £748.60, with a repayment of £44.04 per week!!!

They say we already owe them £751.40…., which is definately not true! We had a couple of crisis loans last year while they messed about with our claim, the total we got altogether was £622, they’ve been taking payments for this since April, from looking at our bank statements, I’ve calculated we’ve paid about £124 back towards this, therefore we should only owe them £498.

I thought that the repayments were structured at either 5, 10 or 12% depending on your circumstances eg having/not having other debts. We clearly stated on the form that we already pay out a good amount monthly towards a loan.

And aren’t they supposed to be repaid over 2 years…, if we were paying back £44.04 a week then that would only cover 28 and a bit weeks.
We have been offered another option of £210.97 paying back £12.41 a week, that works out repayment over 17 weeks.

We have two children, the repayment works out at 20% of our weekly ‘income’…, they’ve totally ignored the fact we already pay other debts and added another £130 onto what they say we owe them already.

My son is now coming up 5 months still in his moses basket which has completly outgrown! so need a cot… no winter clothes for any of us. No washing machine and only have a tiny fridge with a one door freezer which belongs to the property. Really didnt think it would take this long!

Hello there, a couple of weeks ago, me and my partner applied for a Budgeting Loan for removal expenses and deposit etc. Last week I received a letter declining our application because my partner does not claim JSA (I claim it for the both of us and it was me who sent the application in MY name) but they addressed the letter to my partner and said because she doesn’t claim it we aren’t entitled. So, I have wrote a letter asking for a review and explained the situation in full..do you think the decision will be overturned. Thank you in advance.

Hiya,

I applied for a budgeting loan last week for a deposit on a new flat for me and my 6month old son, as we are currently living in the bedroom of my friend’s one bedroom flat, and some furniture to go in it. The advance rent is 2months rent. Which is £860 (one month deposit and first months rent upfront). I get income support and have been since late last year (around august last year). The total amount i applied for is £1000. What’s the likliness of me getting granted it? And how long before i’ll find out if im getting it or not? Also, what’s the number to call and check my application? I live in Elgin, Scotland.

Not likely- they only generally pay 1 month advance rent, and never deposit

There wasn’t three choices to pick, they told me how much I will be paying back and that is that… so i signed the declaration and posted it back accepting it the same day.. now I hope I receive the payment next week.

Hi.
over two years ago I applied for community care grant(as i am disabled and was moving to a ground floor flat for my heart condition) .I was granted money for some items not for curtain and carpet and i was offerd a budgetting loan for those item.I took the budgetting loan and no money was deducted from my benefit to clear the budgetting loan.
As i had enclosed a letter with my budgetting loan form asking them to re-consider that as community care grant, when they did not deduct any payment,I took it that they had regarded the budgetting loan as community care grant. Now after over two years they said it was their mistake and have started to deduct my benefit. This has caused me geat hardship, with fuel and other bills going up.Can they do this after over 2 years.can i appeal?thanks.

Reply

Social Fund November 3, 2011 at 9:10 pm

Good evening again Heidi.

No, we are not dealing with your claim. we offer free advice, and help when we can- however your application is with the DWP, who frankly, can take as long as they fancy.

I think it is worth remembering that the social fund is a discretionary service, NO ONE in “entitled” no a loan or grant, they are issued if it is deemed that you have been unable to cater for your own needs and those of your family, or circumstances outside of your control have caused you hardship and that someone needs to step in to put you back on the right track.

Interestingly- there are no “why can’t your sons father help?” or “you’ve been on benefits for xx years so why not budget so your not in debt?” questions

Nor is there any consideration to the fact that washing machines are relatively recent invention. was EVERYONE in crisis before they were invented??

Sorry- I digress,

Given your hectic schedule, and bussiment with contributing to the public purse, it would be unreasonable to expect that you used the sink for a couple of days wouldn’t it.

Heidi November 3, 2011 at 11:02 pm

Right ok but when my child is at school it doesn’t look very good when I can’t wash it properly my mum has bin helping me but she lives 10 15 miles away so it’s bit of a trek for her to come just to do my sons washing for him but anyway thanks for your help I’m sure I’ll get it soon

Thanks heidi

I have had no washer for years now.And cant get any help from the social am on benefits due to illness. But still manage to boil and wash all my clothes bedding towels by hand and still look clean.I am sure as long as your child is not stinking or fithy he will survive.Buy hanwash soap which is cheap.Use a drop of milton or dettol to kill germs.A washer is not essential it is a convenience and time saving unneccerary item. There are people out there that have no clothes on their backs no shoes on their feet no roof over their heads.so i really think you are pretty well off you have been accepted and just need to be patient.
I am not having a dig as i know how you feel but after many years feeling angry at the circumstances i started looking at people worse of and realised we in the UK dont have it that bad.

hi social fund, sent off my signed declaration last wednesday. was for a small amount of 200 pounds for contribution towards emergency external rewiring (existing wiriring was arc’ing and was a serious combustion hazard). When will the social fund recieve my 2nd class brown letter and how long does it take to process, it is a small amount but fairly urgent. It would help if there was a mail checking service after 4 working days for peace of mind since the delay in putting it on the system isnt really an accurate indicator that a letter has been recieved during that time and then people are waiting uneccesarilly and before you know it the 14 day period is up and the loan is refused. Anyway please respond when you get time, Thanks

Social Fund November 8, 2011 at 8:37 pm

It should have been received by now, however takes around 3 days to action from the date it is acknowledged – give them a call and ask if they can update you.

i was amazed to be told that afts er havingf a budgeting loan i would be paying back £23 out of my benefit every week. i live on less than £40, thats for food and bills. what a laugh. my bills come first. i havnt had a cooed meal in three weeks and no hot water. the government need to help us people who through no choice of our own are out of work. i’v worked for the same company ofr 32yrs until they closed their doors thanks to the bankers and government and also the big rise in electric and gas costs. now im out of work for the first time in my life and the government think that £67 IS ENOUGH TO LIVE ON. HA HA . LIKE TO SEE THEM TRY. I cant afford food and bills. slowly losing weight and seriuosly thinking of taking overdose. cant lie like this. bloody bastards for destroying so many lives and familys

Reply

Social Fund November 9, 2011 at 4:09 pm

Write a letter and explain that they are taking too much- IF you are on only JSA at £67 p/w then £23 is to much. they must have assumed that you are on a whole bunch of other handouts, or maybe your circumstances have changed since the time when you signed to agree to pay back £23/pw???

Its my first budgeting loan I haven’t got any other loans or any other things to pay out for, I have been on income support for a year now and am wondering if I would get the full amount I asked for? I have a daughter to.

alastair king you’d be better off calling the social fund up, they’ll be more help. They only offer advice here. Trust me bro, I know how you feel, general standards have slipped in this country. You’ve got countries imploding all around europe, we’ve got a tory mayor AND government, we’re in a double dip recession with high unemployment. This is what the new world order want, for nations to lose faith in their own monetary policy (which in turn influences fiscal policy) so that people BEG european parliament for a single treasury to govern europes finances. NEW WORLD ORDER experiment will then be complete, they rely on us begging for handouts. The social fund is instructed much like other benefit centres to ‘waste’ time or kick people off benefits on minor technicalities so they can massage unemployment figures for the tories, they do,it with job seekers allowance, kick people off and tell them to reclaim which is simple enough but takes so long that its at least one perspn not registered as unemployed when they really. I used to feel undignified accepting jobseekers allowance but after the bankers and govt put us in this unemployment/recession I was proud to be clawing back that bank bailout money!

alastair, wait exactly 7 days from when you posted it. Call them up and ask them if they;ve recieved your letter, they will tell you the progress and when the paymet was issued and when you wil recieve it, if after 10 days it isnt on the system ask them send you another form and put a note on the system that you want to accept the offer but your letter hasnt arrived otherwise after 14 days they will assume you dont want it. It wouldve helped if you sent the declaration first class recorded by yourself but no biggie. Also if you need the payment urgently and they havent yet issued your payment ask to issue ti via FPS rather BACS. No one except these public services places use the archaic BACS system

Hi there , i have been on jsa for quite some time but now due to health problems i signed off and i am now on the basic esa until they make a decision , i applied for a budgeting loan on the 8th nov whilst on jsa but which is also the day i signed off , will i still be entitled to a loan as i ve signed off and waitin on decision about esa ??? i hope you have time to reply as i see your busy but im quite concerned .

Reply

Social Fund November 11, 2011 at 9:41 pm

Hmm this isn’t straight forward– the basic eligibility criteria that you need to be concerned with is the need to: be in receipt of income related benefit for 26 weeks before you apply.

It seems that on the 8th you met this criteria, however IF you waited even a day to LODGE your ESA claim then it could be argued that on the date of processing the decision you did not meet the 26 week mark.

If you have NO gap, then you *should* be OK, however expect a fight if you have a gap..

Let me. Get back to you Monday after discussing legislation with colleagues

Hi, 4 weeks ago i was living in a mother and baby communal living place with my 5 month old son. Everything as provided there including bed etc. I got my own place 3 weeks ago in which i had nothing what so ever.. My partner moved in with me in which me change all our benefits to joint claims and he done a joint claim for jsa. I applied for a community care grant, and was told me and my 5 month old son was priority for a cooker, carpets, fridge/freezer, tumble dryer, washing machine, settee, and wardrobes. I don’t understand this because my son has a sever reflux which means i have to wash his clothes twice a day due to him being sick constantly. His on medication from the doctors because of this. So i need the washing machine to wash his clothes twice a day, i need the tumble dryer as i have nowhere to dry the clothes as i am in a flat with no balcony, i needed a fridge due to keeping his medison cool, cooker to cook my meals as i am on little money so couldn’t possibly eat out everyday, wasn’t aloud carpets so have to sit on cold broken tiles, and wasn’t aloud a settee to sit on. I needed a microwave to warm my sons food and bottles up. But all this i wasn’t priority for!
So because i was on income support etc i had to sign off due to my partner moving in with me, he now claims job seekers for me too, we applied for a budgeting loan to get all the furniture we wasn’t aloud, he had to claim because he ha been on job seekers more then 26 weeks. I saw someone’s comment above that they got declined because his partner wasn’t on jsa even though he was claiming for her, is this right? Will we get declined because of this?

the loans and applications are taking alot longer at this time of year,

busiest times are before school holidays and christmas, some are taking up to 6 weeks, to look at and further 3-4 weeks to pay out, this is due to the high demand at these times of year,

Yes you can, but it does depend on what your applying for. E.G. if your last loan was in August for a washer, its highly unlikley that you would be awarded a further loan for a washer in what may be deemed a short period.

Firstly I think this is brilliant what you do. Secondly, I think all you ‘me me me’ people need to stop being so selfish! I’m a single mum of an almost 2 year old daughter. I have not had carpets in my home for a year, applied for a com care grant around a month ago and got a measly 300. I have just escaped a very violent relationship in which the ex broke the bed and either took or smashed I’d say three quaters of our stuff yet I haven’t complained once dispite the fact I clearly didn’t get enough money to pay for the stuff I needed. Due to the fact my 2 bed house is huuuge I’m finding it hard to carpet everywhere. I got help from my health visitor who put me in touch with a charity (who put down new carpet for me in my little girls room) just my front room with underlay cost me 470, at 3 per sqm. My hall way etc is bad as my little one seems to keep getting splinters. I’ve applied for carpets, clothes (as due to having my daughter my csection and the stress of everything recently I have love weight but my saggy tummy prevents ANY clothes fitting…) And also need help paying rent arrears. Realistically what will I be getting?? PS to all you idiots who apply cause you want to buy xmas presents etc are plain selfish, save like the rest of us. I was getting 60 every two weeks and I still managed with gas, electric, two different water bills, which totals 40 right there…so I think some of you need to lay off the government as some of us genuinly need the help and don’t get it!!!

Reply

Social Fund November 28, 2011 at 12:58 pm

The maximum that you can get as a loan is £1500.00 with any previous loans deducted from this total- however it is very difficult to give a sound estimate as each application is dealth with individually, and is at the descretion of the particular person dealing with the application.

As such we have seen very similar applications result in vastly differing awards (or not)

The usual repayment rate is 20% of income ( so think £13.50/ week) you can ask for this to be reduced after the fact though

Hi I have applied for a budgetting loan and a community care grant. Can you tell me if there is a chance i will recieve one of these? I have just signed the tenacy on a housing association flat and it is bare. I have always live with my parents so i don’t have any furniture to take with me and the floors have tiles missing on the flat which will cause problems for my 14month old.

How long will it take to hear a decision? Am i likely to get either of them? Im a stay at home mum and on income support ( single) . I have also heard that if i am able to get a budgeting loan the maximum amount i will recieve is £812? is this correct?

Any help would be great!

the amounts depend on your circumstances, and what you have applied for- you can expect a decision around 10 working days from your application date, however at this time of year it can be longer.

Loren December 14, 2011 at 11:17 pm

Hi, I was thinking about applying for a budgeting loan, and would like some advice. I am a 20 year old single mum to my 5 month old daughter. I still live with my parents, but the income support, child tax credits and child benefits I receive covers mine and my baby’s food and general living expenses, as my parents have said that now I’m a parent I have to basically pay my own way. I was thinking of applying for a loan because my daughter has grown out of her Moses basket and is currently sleeping in my single bed with me, which obviously isn’t ideal, so I need to buy her a crib/cot. The only problem with this is my room at my parents is way too small to fit it in as well as my bed and wardrobe etc, so i need to decorate the spare (box) room for her to sleep in there, including carpet/flooring. I also need to buy her bigger clothes. 90% of her clothes she’s had so far have been hand me downs, but I don’t know anyone that has clothes big enough that are suitable for winter. I know it’s a lot that I need, but I thought I would be working by now, and was expecting some sort of help from her father, but he’s disappeared. I was just wondering the likelihood of me being awarded a loan? I have been on income support since may like I said, and was on JSA before that (from march) with no gap inbetween. I have also had one crisis loan of £60 in july when my daughter was born because she was nearly a month early, but I’m pretty sure that’s been fully repaid now. So yeah, before i apply I would just like to know whether it’s worth it, and whether I’d be likely to receive one? Thanks.

It depends on when your tenancy starts- if its soon (3 days) then apply over the phone for an immediate decision- if its weeks away you will have to apply by post- this time of year they are very slow..

I applied for a £200 budgeting loan today.

I’ve been on I.C.A. (Invalid Carer Allowance) and Income Support top up for 2 years solid.

I was under the impression that you don’t have to be specific about what the loan is for and that you just tick the relevant boxes on the form (Shoes & Clothes, Furniture & Household Items) or whatever.

Now, as I read through this page I see people making lists of specific things they need and people getting £450 instead of £900 because their household items can be bought for less money.

Three points:
1) I’ve been claiming / receiving the relevant benefit for almost 4 times the required length of time.
2) I am asking to borrow £200 and not the £1500 maximum.
3) I can easily pay this amount back at £10 or £5 per week and I have asked for it to be deducted automatically from my Income Support.

Surely this is a reasonable request and should be accepted.

I went to the Job Centre Plus for the application form and they told me that they “Don’t do forms” these days, but they gave me a 1st Class envelope and a card with the relevant phone numbers on it.

So, I had to phone up an 0845 number (costs money), listen to the obligatory “This phone call is being recorded” and then a bunch of options – which is probably designed to suck your last £2 at the phone box so that you are disconnected before you get through – and then they sent me a form which was here 2 days later.

I filled the form in and sent it back in the 1st Class envelope I got from the Job Centre Plus (I only received a 2nd Class envelope with the application form) and now I am waiting for the response.

When I get this response – if successful – I will obviously agree to the repayments and then send it back to them. I will then have to wait 10 days – or up to 4 weeks? No doubt they will obviously send another 2nd Class envelope.

This whole process could easily be done online or over the telephone.

It would save the Job Centre a lot of time and money that could be spent elsewhere in the infrastructure.

One time I went to sign on – a few years ago – and I was 10 minutes early. “Go and take a look at the boards,” I was told. So I did – then I went back at 1:29pm – “We are not ready yet – look at the boards again”.

I had a look at the lack of jobs and then there was a queue of about 5 people – which I joined at the back around 1:32pm. The Job Centre advisor was a disabled woman who insisted on interrogating the first 5 people in the queue for almost 10 minutes each before they were allowed to sign on.

“Have you been looking for work?” – (Yes) – “I want to know exactly where have you been looking for work?” – “Would you consider working in another area? Perhaps Blackburn which is 15 miles away and has an even higher number of unemployed people looking for work!”

Finally – it was my turn to sign on – at 14:10pm. She gave me an official warning for signing on 40 minutes later than the agreed time.

As a Carer – I don’t have to look for work. I spend 35 hours per week looking after a sick relative. However – when I started my claim – I had to wait an hour past my interview time (because the Asian woman making a claim in front of me couldn’t speak English and they were trying to find her a job). The advisor then spent the next 45 minutes trying to find me a job – when I specifically told her that I would find work in my own time when the time was right – but I am not interested in working for the next few weeks.

These people mess everybody about and keep you waiting for hours in some cases – yet if you are 2 minutes late – they rebook your appointment. I watched this happen 4 weeks ago when I accompanied a friend to the Job Centre Plus. A bloke was less than 2 minutes late. As he walked in – he had to wait in a queue for 5 minutes to tell the guy at the front desk that he was here for his appointment.

“You are 8 minutes late,” said the guy at the front desk. “We will have to rebook you with Sheila”.

Sheila was an advisor who was sat behind a PC screen in an otherwise empty office space. She rescheduled his appointment for an hour’s time. When he left – she was sat there doing nothing for the next 45 minutes whilst I was there.

I mean – these people are on £8 per hour or whatever for treating people like crap – almost provoking people to shout at them – just so that they can stop their claim or throw them out. There is less and less work for the Job Centre staff to do these days and the whole operation looks like a complete waste of money from the taxpayers point of view.

I got thrown out of the Job Club at one point because I came across as being disinterested in the “positive thinking” rubbish they were trying to instil into the local dimwits. Three days after that I landed a computer job at a local internet firm where a friend of mine worked. Suddenly I was on £350 per week – and I went back to the job centre after my interview and told the woman who was running the place.

Guess what she did! Printed it out on a huge sheet of paper – and stuck it on the Job Club wall – that “Chris” had been to Job Club for 4 weeks – and they’d found him the job he’d always wanted. With a message saying that the Job Club actually works! She even wrote it down in her book so that I was a statistic that they got paid for!

Of course, when you start working – the £350 doesn’t last long. There’s £80 tax and National Insurance. £25 per week Council Tax. £80 per week rent. The cost of going to work, shoes, clothes, etc. dinners and transport. But you are better off in the long run.

However – a single mother who lives around here got a 16 hour per week part-time job and she gets full housing benefit, council tax rebates, family tax credits and anything she pays in terms of tax and insurance she gets back tenfold in other benefits.

This is what annoys me. Rewarding a woman for having 5 children to 10 different dads and working 4 hours per afternoon, 4 days a week.

Anyway – do you think I’ll get my £200 loan? lol

Hi Chris,

Yes- The common thinking here is that you should qualify, based on what you have said.

It may be an idea to take your acceptance lettyer to the jobcentre and ask that they fax it- may be quicker?

re: your observations, you raised a laugh here- so true!!

Thanks for the heads up.

Glad you had a laugh!

Currently looking for a bit of work – but I burnt my bridges with my old boss.

Basically I write content for websites and I was on good money. But then the boss got greedy and started paying peanuts after I had a couple of months off.

I had a go at him – and then he offered me £300 to £400 per week…but at this point I sent him so real nasty messages back and told him to shove the job…ahem!!!

Good thinking, Batman!

Now I’m on £55 per week Carer Allowance looking after my sick mother…whilst looking at old friends on Facebook who are living it large.

hi christopher, if you struggle with having no money due to not getting your payment on time then apply for a crisis loan, it has to be repaid, but you could get it the same day.

hey kerry, depending on how backlogged they are it can take up to 8 weeks, but i have never waited this long. Have you tried applying to your council for saftey equipment, or asking you health visitor, s/he can contact groups that can help. one i went to was like a 1 hr course that i had to attend, i then recieved around 4 gates and proper window locks.

I got my acceptance letter just before Christmas – I sent it back agreeing to the repayments on Friday 23rd…

Just got a letter today saying the money will be in my account on 5th January (tomorrow).

The letter was dated 30 Decemeber.

So it took just under 10 days for them to agree to the loan – and just short of a couple of weeks to pay out.

This was over the Christmas / New Year break though – so it’s been good for me.

One other thing -> I joined the credit union – I got a tax rebate for £500 about 2 days before Christmas…lol

Spent Christmas with no money – but now I’ve got £700 available to spend tomorrow – when I don’t need it!

Las Vegas here I come! haha

BTW – The reason I joined the Credit Union was because nobody would cash my cheque without loads of ID.

You can join the credit union and pay a cheque into a savings account – you just need two recent letters – no passport or driving license required.

You can also get a pre-paid VISA card from them.

So when my cheque clears tomorrow – I can top it up with £200 and buy stuff online, at shops or use an ATM for a 75p fee. Cashback from Asda is free. It costs 50p to “load” the card with money and 75p for an ATM withdrawal but everything else is free – including the card (at my credit union at least!).

If you are a single person you can have upto i think it is around 813 pounds and a couple will get more this is a budgeting loan only. You can have this for anything from clothes, baby things to paying off loans, u may not get what you ask for if you already owe them for another budgeting loan. Any crisis loans you owe are not taken into account. When applying it asks you to tick what you need it for, tick anything yo uneed to apply for. If you want to know anything get in touch with me. thanks

Hello,
I still owe about £100 on my budgeting loan of £350. If I could pay the £100 now and clear my debt early could I then apply for another £350? I ask because while on the employment zone some of my repayments weren’t deducted from my benefits, I had forgotten about this and thought I’d nearly repaid my loan but it won’t be repaid till May and I need some money “now”.
Some time ago I applied for a budgeting loan while still paying one off and was offered half the amount I still owed (it said this was by law).
I understand you may not be able to give a yes or no answer but any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

Each loan is dependant on your circumstances, and how close you are to the maximum allowable..

Hello,

I am about to hand a budget loan application in. I need it for clothes and furniture. I need a question answering though which is important before I complete the form. I live at my fathers house, I pay him private rent (Nothing official, but he owns the house, re mortgage) he works away as a driver and is away most of the week, and rarely is here. So I live on my own pretty much and have to look after the house. He is also in debt and on very low income so he cannot help with what I’m going to explain below.

I’ll cut a long story short and won’t go into details why, but the fridge/freezer & cooker are both broke and not usable now, so I’m looking at the budget loan to get new ones with some clothes. My question is: Will the loan be allowed for me to get afridge/freezer & cooker for a house I’m not officially paying rent at and is not mine? The reason I am asking is, should I put it in the notes as to what I really need so they can work out better how much to give me, or would they not allow me to get a new fridge/freezer & cooker for a house I’m not officially paying rent at and is not mine?

I get ESA, cannot work and do not have any options to get any loans or anything.

I sent off for a budgeting loan yesterday. I was wondering how long it usually takes for a decision to be made?
I was told by the gentleman I spoke to on the phone that if you have been recieving a qualifying benefit for 26 weeks and fall into the right catagory you will get the loan!!
I have applied as I want to take a course and buy materials to get back into work.
Do you think I will get the loan?
Thanks

Cheers. Sorry for double post use this one too reply.

So to get a SOCIA FUND loan of any description you will have have to be on INCOME BASED JSA, so the past 26 weeks on contribution based JSA was a waste of time?
What a ridiculous system so thats 26 weeks on Contribution based JSA then another 26 weeks on income based JSA. 53 weeks a year before you would be considered elligable for any SOCIAL FUNDING?
Wow now thats a real incentive to do anything to work.

No wonder people go bat shit crazy with staff at the local job centre.

Roll on self employment.

I have been unemployed now for about 9 months and really need a budgeting loan….

My washing machine has stopped working and so has my fridge freezer, the oven has blown too ( i basically have a kitchen with everything broken)

Because i used to work I was on Conts based JSA for the first 6 months and have been on Income based JSA for the last 2-3 months, would i be entitled to a loan now or have to wait another 3-4 months?

If i have to wait until i have been on Income based JSA for 6 months that makes a total of 12-13 months, what am i supposed to do in the meantime? How would it be fair that someone thats never worked can get anything from £100-£1000 after 6 months and i have to try and go 13 months….. surely things have to be looked at on their own merits?

Regards

John

Did not receive an offer of a budgeting loan. :-(
Because I was not on Income Support, INCOME! based JSA (or other related benefits) or no break of 28 days in any claim.
Now Im having a crisis, will have to go for a crisis loan instead….
Its only a 7 days wasted posting and waiting. I will have to fill the crisis loan form in now.
At least the Crisis loan has no idiotic restrictions like a budgeting loan (has it?).

Reply

unfortunately you have to be on a means tested ( JSA income based/Income support etc) for 6 months to qualify- JSA contribution based does not count.

your move to Income support should not break your 6 months served though.. so apply in 4-5 months time
