Crisis loans

Crisis Loans are emergency payments for unforseen or unavoidable circumstances, Crisis Loans can be either applied for over the phone on the latest CRISIS LOAN NUMBER or you can us an application form. The maximum crisis loan ammount available to any one household is £1500, and this limit it non negotiable. If you have hit your limit you can no longer be awarded any further loans until you have paid back some of the debt owed. In these circumstances you can apply for a Community Care Grant

To apply for a Crisis Loan online get the CRISIS LOAN ONLINE APPLICATION

Crisis loans over the Telephone:

In some circumstances Crisis Loan applications can be taken over the telephone in an interview that will take around half an hour, at the end of this time your application will be assessed by the person that you were speaking to whilst you are on hold and if awarded – the amount that can be paid to you will be sent to your local Jobcentre Plus office for collection as a Giro  that you can take to exchange for cash at you nominated Post Office that day.

The crisis loan application process is very simple, initially you will need to call the Social fund telephone number for your area and go through a set of security questions ( you will need your National Insurance number) and once you have done this you will need to explain the circumstances of your crisis.

Depending on the Nature of your crisis you may be offered a face to face interview or continue the application over the phone.

Generally you will be able to apply over the phone for any immediate disaster, or unforeseen loss of income- however may need to provide further information if your application relies on an application for money to secure a property ( Rent in advance) and you may be asked for a valid tenancy agreement

Crisis loans provide help for people who need money quickly because of expenses in an emergency or disaster. They can also help with rent in advance in certain circumstances. Crisis loans have to be paid back to the Social Fund, but they are interest-free. This means you will not have to pay back more than the amount of the loan. Crisis loans are discretionary which means that you will not get one just because you are eligible to apply. The benefit office will decide whether to pay you anything based on how much money is in the district Social Fund budget, and how urgently you need help.

Who can apply for a crisis loan

Anybody over the age of  16 can apply for a Crisis Loan, if they find themselves in a situation where they do not have enough income to provide for their immediate needs in the short term, this can be for single people or for families. A Crisis Loan is assessed based on the situation that you are in, and not for a future event, so  there is no point applying for an upcoming phone bill. To qualify for a Crisis Loan, you do not need to be on Benefits, however you do have to be in a situation where you are unable to obtain resources from another source, Bank loans or wages for example. There are some people that are excluded from being awarded Crisis Loans, this includes people under 16 those in permanent residential  care, and those in Prison.

Who cannot get a crisis loan

People in the following categorise cannot be awarded Crisis Loans:-

  • Those  in a care home or in hospital, unless you are going to be discharged within the next two weeks
  • Those that are a prisoner being held in prison or on home leave
  • Those that are a member of a religious order which meets all your accommodation and living costs
  • Those that  are under 19 and in full-time education (unless you are getting Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance or income-related Employment and Support Allowance).

Your Immigration status will have an effect on your ability to be awarded a Crisis Loan

If you are unsure if you will qualify or are able to apply, you can speak to your local  Citizens Advice Bureau. to get advice be e-mail you can contact your (New window) nearest CAB.

What expenses can a crisis loan be made for

A crisis loan can be paid for any specific need unless it is an excluded expense. However, the need must have arisen because of an emergency or disaster, or because you have to pay rent in advance in certain circumstances. An emergency or a disaster could be a fire or flood, or some other event which means you need something very quickly which you cannot afford. The crisis loan must be the only way that you can avoid serious damage or risk to the health or safety of you or a member of your family.

What is a Crisis Loan? An interest free loan, which is available to assist people to meet their immediate short-term needs in an emergency or as a consequence of a disaster. Available to people who have no other means of getting help to avoid serious risk to health or safety.

Hi Amanda,

Usually it takes between 3 and 5 days for the offer letter to be received back at the office dealing with your claim- once this is done payment is generally 3 days after.

I have just applied for a crisis loan. I have to be out of my rented house in less than a week and although i have found a house and have a deposit I do not have enough for the rent in advance or money to hire a van for the removals. I have tried every avenue including a budgeting loan but I am under the 26 weeks and 4 days of receiving JSA and don’t hit that until about 24th Jan, I will be homeless then. When I say I, I mean, me, my pregnant partner and 2 children. I phoned the crisis line last Friday to be told that as I still had a home my case wasn’t urgent but I am so worried about times now. They will hopefully deal with my form either Monday or Tuesday of this coming week but then they will probably send me a letter with an agreement in and then payment is another few days. By then we will be homeless. I really am at my wits end. I cannot wait till we are sitting on a park bench on Saturday to claim we are now actually homeless with all of our furniture on the street. Taking into account the urgency and dates which are on the form do you think they will deal with it promptly and call me maybe? And is it possible that I could maybe get the money very quickly? I am worried that the estate agent is going to get the hump and let the house to someone else. Houses where you are on housing benefit are extremely hard to come by. I appreciate any advice you can give. Thanks

Hi George,

The advice that you seem to have been given is shockingly bad!

1) Your application IS urgent- and should betaken over the phone!
2) Paper applications take a week – ten days.

Call 08000328366 / 08000328355 first thing tomorrow morning (8:30) and explain that you have to move out and need to apply for rent in advance over the phone.

If they say you have to wait for the paper application- tell them you didnt realise it would take so long, and you cannot wait.

By LAW they have to give you an immediate (at least same day decision!)

Dont be fobbed off – the test that they need to apply at this stage is: ” is the situation such that a same day decision is needed?” Answer = YES!

then they consider: “is a crisis loan over the phone/at same day interview the ONLY resort?” Answer =YES

Once this is established, they have two options
1) take the application and decide whilst your on the phone
2) Book you an interview at the Jobcentre tomorrow for a decision.

For either of these process’ they will be looking at

1) the urgency of the situation ( within 2 days is permissible)
2) your required amount ( must be below £1500)
ALSO your application MUST keep your total joint debt to the Social fund under£1500
E.G. you already owe £600 your wife owes £300 (TOTAL DEBT = £900) means they will turn you down if you
apply for more than £599..
3)That you have a property to go to

You may be asked for:
1) A copy of your eviction notice
2) A copy of your tenancy agreement for the new property
3) Verification that YOU can pay the deposit.

They will not WANT to pay you a rent in advance due to MASSIVE fraud on this type of loan, and they WILL try to fob you off, dont be surprised if they even put the phone down on you a couple of times!

PERSEVERE!

And keep calling back until you get a formal decision-

If they turn you down, ask for a REVIEW, if this fails ask for the IRS to look at it ( at IRS stage YOU WILL BE PAID, if you meet the above regarding debt , need, and amount..)

Good luck- and if you need any more advice drop us a line (also let us know how you got on!)

Could I get a crisis loan to help me pay my rent arrears I have a letter from my housing that I’m being evicited on Wednesday the council have offered to pay 500 of my arrears but the housing have said that is not enough as it would take to long to pay the rest of the arrears back so I was thinking of getting a crisis loan for 300 then that would be 800 coming of my arrears and they might withdraw the evicition I have two small children and no where else to go and I’m really worry thanks

Yes, you can see one of the landlords of the properties that you are interested in and ask or a tenancy agreement in principal – this will allow you to supply all of the docs needed to qualify.

hi, i applied for a community care grant for beds for my self and my 3 childeren, was turned down the community care grant and was offered a crisis loan in stead covering the cost of 3 beds and a cooker ! I sent the declaration of acceptance back straight away wich a note attached of my new address . I never heard bk anything so i rang up and was told at first they never recived my acceptance form for me to sign and send another which I DID ! i went to the jobcentre and they faxed it straight to them ! Then still havent heard again a week later so i gave them another ring yet again and was informed that the payment was sent to previous address where i was stayin, don’t know why they did that ! i was told to get intouch with my previous address to see if they have recived it and i was told they aint recived any mail for myself . Yet again i got back on the fone explained tht my previous address hasn’t recived any mail for me . They told me tht they have to report it missing and they goin to send me another form for me to sign and send back to declaire i haven’t recived my loan by this time which i think was goin into the 4th week of waitin for my payment . I recived the form signed it and sent it straight back YET AGAIN ! A couple days later i rang to make sure they have recived it and was told again they haven’t . As a result of waitin for my loan i had no other alternative but to contact social sevices as my kid’s had no beds and i had no cooker and we are suffering cause of this .I recived another form which i signed and took to my local job centre and they faxed it ova to them then rang them to make sure they recived it , Finally they recived this one and i was told its gettin look at in the next 24 hrs . It has been appromaxially 6 weeks and yet i havent recived it . I ring up every day some times twice a day and i just get fobbed off and aparantly they doin the searches of a missin giro and i get told to call bk !!!!! chrisis loans are the least helpfull people you will ever speak to i rang for a chrisis as i had no money for another week i had already gone 4 days without food and i also take tablets for ocd and skits which have to be taken with food.i also had my 2 young children under 3.they told me i would have to attend a interview at a local job center which is 3 miles away.i explained that i could not walk thatfar on an empty stomach and that i was paanoid to go to town the guy then started to be obnoxios so i asked for his name and he put the phone down on me.the service is poor and discusting if was a drug addict immagrent or alchy i would have had cash but seen as i am a law abidding citizen i get tret like a bum.;so my advice is dont waste your credit ringing them just become a non english speaking alchy druggy n watch your money come in freely

You sir are an idiot, instead of using the old tired excuses of illegal immigrants, and people who have drug/drink problems always get money, try getting off your lazy arse and sort yourself out.

3 miles isn’t the end of the world, its just you sound like most people who can get help but cant be bothered getting a bus or walking for half hour, so you blame everyone else. your condition doesn’t stop you having children etc so get a bloody job and you wont have these problems.

Mr Williams, your comment “get a bloody job”. Your a Idiot yourself. Are you currently looking for a job? I DONT THINK SO, but I hope you soon loose your job and join us job seekers.
Im a Qualified sparky and a gas safe fitter, still no chance .My last job was cleaning a local B&B, great fun and HARD work, but The owners of that went bust.
Its a horrible world out there with no money and the bills keep coming. I Spent 6 weeks without services, when I went from jsa to sickness, so sold my car to pay for that. Its a downward spiral no matter what one does . 1042 job apps in 6 months , got 25 interviews attended to and only 7 bothered to say thanks but no thanks. Im 50 now, and as I kept my eye on the jobs I did find out that 4 of the jobs I had an interview for went to our Euro friends even though with my skills I was prepared to drop to the minimum wage, not skilled wage! the minimum wage. Ive now started to paint and sell my work on ebay to servive.
Good luck Mr Brayshaw, get a life Mr Williams

Hi I am just wondering if you think I will get a crisis loan for this. I have been claiming JSA since last April but in November i got a temporary christmas job in a popular retail outlet. I worked there until 31/12/10 as that was the end of my conract so I went to my jobcentre and started claiming JSA again. Now I owe my mum housekeep since January which has built up to about £300. She has let me off for long enough and really needs the money now as we need to get our bathroom fixed as the water from the shower has been seeping through the walls and has made it damp. I really need money urgently and my JSA simply will not cover it.
Please get back to me with any advice or answers, thank you.

Reply

Social Fund April 11, 2011 at 8:51 pm

Unfortunately it sounds as though you may be too late- when you are waiting for benefit (in your case JSA) to be processed you can apply for crisis loans to bridge the gap, however once your JSA is sorted this option is closed – given what you have said you may not qualify for a ccg either.

You can still apply for crisis loans on the basis that you have given all your JSA to your mum to cover the debt.-if you decide to do this. However please remember that crisis loans are discretionary.

We know this is not much help, but suggest that you call the social fund directly and explain your situation, if your mum had threatened eviction a crisis loan may be your only option and they would consider it much more openly.

yes- you can apply for a crisis loan, just the same as any one else, but when they turn you down due to your debt ask for it to be referred as a Community Care Grant. this is not bound by the £1500 limit, and should be able to help.

Hi there. I work for a church and we get a lot of people coming to our door asking for money for some crisis or other. Difficult to tell the genuine from the cons but i suppose you still have to be able to offer them some form of help or advice in case they are genuine. The main story we get is that they have nowhere else to go and they need the money today, and, as they usually come at night or on a weekend, things like the crisis loan number is closed. Is there any way they can get help out of hours in an emergency? Many thanks! Alex

Reply

Social Fund May 2, 2011 at 10:30 am

Yes, there is out of hours cover for crisis loans- this is in the form of the local Police- advise them to go go to the police, and they will be considered for help ( the police will call a confidential crisis loan number, manned by Social fund staff)

Hi,

I live in private rented, with my 14 year old niece and am in receipt of JSA. My housing benefit is nowhere near enough to cover my rent, leaving me less than £100 per month to pay all my bills, food etc. I ran out of heating oil (only sourse of energy for Water and heating), in October last year. I applied for crisis and budgeting loan, refused both! With no hot water since, I used electric fires over the winter and I now have a massive electricity bill to pay. I have been served a section 21 notice for re-possession of the house. I will reach the qualifying 26 weeks on income based JSA, on May 13th. I need to find somewhere else to live but have no money to fund this. I cannot pay the electricity bill, water bill, am behind on my rent and am being taken to court over unpaid council tax too. What help can I get? Having applied before it does seem that the system is designed to be nothing more than an expensive administrative waste of time, giving false hope to the most desperately poor people in society. How homeless and broke do we need to be before we can get the help that would have stopped us being homeless and broke in the first palce?

Sincerely,
Dave.

as you have a section 21, you should ( in theory ) be able to get help with rent in advance it would depend on your present level of debt, but if you find a property you shoeld be awarded a loan- if you already of £1500 you will not be able to borrow any further, HOWEVER you can apply for a crisis loan AND ASK for it to be converted to a community care grant. Hope this helps.

If you’re job applications are filled in anything like your forum posts then I’m not surprised you can’t find work!

Never mind dole dossers, the Police, Army, NHS, Fire Brigade cost the tax payer more!

They use police helicopters with infra-red cameras to bust people for growing a few cannabis plants.

Now – how much does it cost in fuel and pilot training for that?

Also – they have wards for terminally ill children and old people – again – a waste of money…these people are never going to contribute back to the system.

I have recently had some health issues and awaiting an operation which means i am unable to work and as a consequence ended up losing my jobs. My husband has had thousands of interviews but still no work. He is a skilled tradesman.
After losing my home we was forced to live in caravan until recently finding a flat that we can afford on benefits.
I am not proud that aged 25 i cannot support myself but desperate times. It’s hard enough to ask for help without feeling in adequate or ashamed without other people who seem to have it all labeling us SCUM !!!
I was once like you had everything and then woke up with nothing. So dont ever label me as SCUM you dont know me or anyone else on here or what we have been through to get here. I hope you never need any help or feel the way i feel right now. You should be the one who is ASHAMED not us.

very well said Cassie couldnt agree with you more.
i have worked all my life in kitchens and got fed up with it so i left a company i had worked for nearly 5 years to take a job in sales. i was put on a trial as with most new jobs and thought i was doing quite well but after about 8 weeks i was told that my manager didn’t think it was the right job for me and basically let go. This was about 4 weeks ago and i have signed on, applied for housing benefit etc.
my point is i have never been in this situation in my life and am shocked by how vulnerable, worthless and scared it makes me feel. luckily my landlord is being very understanding but i don’t know for how much longer.
An uncertain future is not a nice thing to face especialy in the current economic climate and those like Sarah should stay off forums like this or at least hold their tongue until they have some experience of how us “SCUM” are feeling. You should be ashamed of yourself Sarah

Sarah,it’s a wonder that you can work, when it’s obvious that haven’t yet seemed to grasp the concept of literacy.
Maybe you should stop judging people that you dont know, and try taking some basic literacy classes. And also while your at it,a class or two in manners and humility wouldn’t go amiss. I know for certain that if YOU came to me for employment, you would be shown the door. You are a very ignorant and rude person.Who seems to posess a very limited and colourful dialect.

Unfortunately a crisis loan is not payable for items in those circumstances, however IF you spent your benefits on beds, you MAY get a crisis loan for food and fuel….

i would love to go back to work but as a single parent with 3 kids i couldnt afford to put 2 into private nurseries even with the 70% the government help with. id still have to pay 500 pounds for nursery, plus an after school club for my older boy whos at school plus rent, council tax, electric gas , food and everything else. honestly why people are calling us scum for having to ask for help is beyond me. not all people who are on benifits are wanting to sit at home all day and watch tv, most of us would actually preferr to have a job and a real life.

Hi, if you are at your social fund limit of £1500, you can not be awarded and more loans BUT you can still apply for a Crisis loan, and when you are turned down *ask for it to be converted to a CCG (community care GRANT)**

Hi Danny,

if you are claiming benefit, and homeless your local authority (Council) MAY be able to help with the bond, and the Social fund may help with the rent in advance. However you will need to find the property, and sort the bond BEFORE approaching the crisis loan section for the rent in advance as they are prohibited from helping with bonds/deposits/admin fees.

Hope that helps..

Not sure what your question is?

But it takes around 4 days for a paper application to be received by you and a further 5 days ( after posting) for it to be delivered and looked at. payment should follow this by 3 days.

yes you can apply for one.

however you will need to be clear about the reasons for applying, as usually rent in advance applications are awarded to prevent a risk to health and safety – so you will have to show that their is a risk if you dont get one I.E that you will be homeless..

Hi I am a single mum to 3 children that works full time. I have had an eviction note from my mortgage company but to stop the eviction I have to pay a £1140 by the 28th month. This I can pay but will leave 4 of us no money to live for the next month. Am I eligible for a loan for food gas and electric to get me to next payday?

Reply

Social Fund June 24, 2011 at 3:02 pm

in theory yes, anyone can apply for a crisis loan, and most people can legally be paid one, however it is more difficult to get a crisis loan if you are working as you will be asked if you have any other way of getting the money ( people at work tend to be able to get credit in the form of bank loans etc).

Aslo it is worth noting that you will not get the whole amount that you spent awarded, but rather a maximum daily allowance based on you, your family and income. We assume that you are getting tax credits? if so its likely that this will be taken into account and may lower your award, and or shorten your award period.

Technically and legally you *should* be able to get help in the situation that you have described, however there are a lot of other variables.

so our advice is to apply over the phone, AFTER you have paid the mortgage, and if turned down at the first stage, ASK FOR A REVIEW, and if not successful at this stage tell the reviewing officer that you want it to go to the “IRS”, who overturn decision 99% of the time in the customers favour..

the whole process should take 3-4 days

GOOD LUCK :)

At present some of the gas/electric companies actually give you grants for debts and for appliances. I know british gas do$ look on the company’s website at what you are eligable for. If you suit the criteria then you can apply for the grant to cover the debt, based on the premiss that you will set up a payment plan to avoid further debt. Hope this helps

Hi. Just a quick post to say the Police offices no longer hold telephone numbers. The emergnecy social services / social work department now only hold the telephone number.

I work in a telephone centre in Glasgow that deal with Social Fund applications – Crisis Loans – I never refuse an application unless the law prevents me. I stumbled across this site by accident. And I am gutted about what I have just read.

There are many staff that do not deal with an application correctly – there are 2500 staff on the 0800 lines and the Jobcentre Plus should deal with this as they do listen to the calls, however, telling people on a public website about what to say and what not to say in order to ensure they get a payment, well I now wonder what the point is?

From my point of view, it makes it more difficult to determine genuine people in crisis – from someone that has just read a whole load of information and now knows what to say.

I will now be less likely to give the caller the benefit of the doubt. I’ll just refuse it. And as you said earlier they can go the the IRS – they will pay it. It will keep my call handling time short, if nothing else.

Sorry to be negative – But am a feeling a bit negative now after reading the previous posts.

:-(

Hi James,

If you have made a claim to benefit but are waiting for it to be processed, then yes you can be awarded a crisis loan.

so if you have not already done so re claim benefit if that is your intention, and once this is done you will be able to be considered for a crisis loan

Hi,
Me and my partner made a claim for JSA and were awarded only £6.15 a week this was because my partner received a student loan even though the student loan has been used and completely spent months before we made our claim they still took the money into account as if we still had it.
Obviously it is impossible for two people to live on £6.15 a week so we’ve had to apply for crisis loans to get us by until our appeal comes through/get a job. We tried to apply for one today but was told that we could only apply for three a year and we’ve gone over that. Now we don’t have any money and have no food, electricity or gas and its a complete nightmare. What are we meant to do?

Reply

Social Fund July 15, 2011 at 3:40 pm

Hi Robert,
THIS IS GONNA BE A LONG ONE– BUT PLEASE READ IT ALL!!

Unfortunately the JSA section attribute your income as though you had spent it, as it was intended to be spent.

Most student loans are paid on a yearly or per term basis, and as such should be divided into weekly portions and budgeted this way- so the JSA section have taken your overall student loan, and divided it by the weeks that is was supposed to cover THEN applied this to your JSA award.

This is the correct method of dealing with income (even if youve spent it) so your appeal may not get you anywhere- as JSA is not discretionary.

A crisis loan is discretionary – HOWEVER as of April this year a new rule has come into play meaning that you can only be awarded 3 loans in a rolling year for certain circumstances.

****HOWEVER***

This rule ( as far as we understand it) CAN NOT APPLY TO ALIGNMENTS TO BENEFIT.

An alignment to benefit is a Crisis loan that is payable to those who have made a claim to benefit (JSA/ESA/IS) but are yet to be paid- this does not directly reflect your situation at the moment, BUT if you closed your claim today and reopened it on Tuesday ( assuming that you dogged them to close your original claim oN the system)

You could apply for an ALIGNMENT until they again decided that you were not entitled to a full award of JSA…

If you found that money issues were causing your relationship irreparable damage and you decided to separate……….. and moved out……. then the student loan would only effect one of you, leaving the other to be entitled to £67 ( age dependant)

Finally- when the crisis loan section are closed you can go to your local police station who may be able to help, they have access to the out of our crisis loan number for your area — reports suggest that they dont care about the 3 in a year rule..

All the best.

Reply

Moe August 20, 2011 at 8:10 am

Long reply and not worth reading, if JSA is in pay the loan would not be looked at as an alignment. Direction 14c applies regardless. Oh and don’t you think encouraging people to pretend they have broke up and fraudulently claiming benefits is wrong no matter how you dress it up????

Reply

Anon July 17, 2011 at 9:45 pm

Just to let you know, you can no longer apply for crisis loans for items any more, these were removed from payment from the 4th April. People are now only allowed to apply for items as a consequence of a disaster. Rent in advance has not been changed however.

Hello I would like some advice please.

I lost my job the end of March and started claiming income support and tax credits. However I’m in so much debt through working, I’m constantly overdrawn and my bank is charging me £120 a mth (min) in bank charges. I was thinking about applying fir a budgeting loan to get my bank square. Plus to buy my children’s school uniforms as I just can’t afford them. I do owe the Social Fund a little bit of money from an old loan but that will be finished in Aug. (a couple of weeks or less about £60 to pay)

However can I still apply as I have only been claiming since the end of March?

Thankyou

Hi, great site BTW!

I have just been put on a sanction for a month, I think (for not applying for a job – even though I applied for it IN THE JOBCENTRE!!!!). Hardship payments (60% of income based JSA) will start to be paid in 2 weeks time.

Obviously, I am appealing this decision and, if it it is refused, will be taking legal action and go to the local papers (and will get subpoena’s through a solicitor for copies of the online apps I filled at the jobcentre). But that’s by-the-by.

I have already been awarded £35 (for a week’s food etc.). But I was wondering if I could apply for a Crisis Loan for services – you see, I’m homeless (sofa-surfing) but I rent a storage unit for £80 per month which contains all my belongings, including clothes, furniture that I’m still paying for, heirlooms, family photos, all my financial / ID papers – EVERYTHING!

My rent for this was due a couple of days ago – but as I had no money, the Direct Debit for £80 was returned and £20 was charged in overdue fees by my bank(payable on the 1st Aug). On top of this – the unit has been padlocked so I can’t get to my stuff until I pay what’s due. So I’m stuck wearing the same clothes for days on end (which are the same clothes I will have to wear to a Job interview I have on 3rd August – they’re gonna smell me!).

So, basically, my question is: Would I be eligable for a Crisis Loan to pay for the storage debt and bank charges (seeing as I’m in this debt because of my Job Centre’s incompetence)???

Many Thanks!

Social Fund August 1, 2011 at 9:43 pm

Hi, its a bit of a sticky situation as Crisis Loans CAN NOT be paid to offset a sanction, so you will be turned down- however if you lost your JSA hardship, then this is eligible for replacement by a crisis loan……

A crisis loan can be awarded for rent in advance, there is no benefit related eligibility to consider ( i.e. budgeting loan 26 weeks on benefit) so you can apply for that now, you may need to show a copy of your tenancy agreement, and also show that you would be in severe hardships ( with a risk to your health and safety ) if you didn’t move into this new place..

I have been awarded a 2 bedroom flat by the council, but i have no money to buy carpets – there is only the concrete floor.I am moving in 10 days time.I work 8 hours a week, also receiving a little income support since march.I applied for a crisis loan yesterday by post to ask for £500 to cover the carpet for the flat, this was the cheapest quote i got.But I am just wondering if i did the right thing, maybe I should have applied for a budgeting loan.will they consider it as a crisis or is it likely to be turned down? There is no way for me to pay for the carpet on my own, it is an effort to scrape together enough for the moving.Any help or idea would be greatly appreciated.many thanks

1 I’ve sent off an application for a crisis loan, however I think there maybe a possibility I could have sent it to the wrong local benefit office. Would a decision still be made and will my claim be processed?

2 Also how long after my application is received does it take to receive a decision by letter?

Hi I’m 22 years old and have a little boy who is four. I work part time (16hours a week) and receive child tax and working tax, I’m currently living with my parents and it is very overcrowded which leaves my son sharing a bedroom with me , I have found a suitable 2 bed house privately rented and I have to pay £1150 upfront, I have got the money for the deposit but I’m struggling to find the firsts months rent, and if I did manage to then it would leave me with no money to buy things when I move in, I have phoned asking about a crisis loan and the woman said because I work that I’m not entitled to any help! Is there anyway I could get help with this?? I feel like I’m completely stuck!!

Reply

Social Fund September 23, 2011 at 7:58 am

Generally you pay back less than 20%of your income. And the repayment period is usually 104 weeks. But it totally depends on how much you get each week.

They will tell you in advance how much your repayments will be if you ask.

You can apply for home improvements- however these are generally related to items that you NEED to live, rather than replacing items broken by tenants, as this is generally covered by landlord insurance..

i was just wondering why we have to be on jsa for 26 weeks before we can apply for a budgeting loan?? unfortunatley both me and my partner lost our jobs and now are jsa but we simply cannot afford to live, we either pay bills or buy food, we have 2 small children and have alot of detbs as we have to rely on catalogues to be able to but appliances and household items, we now owe alot of money to crediters( didnt realise we would lose jobs), so we would be in the same position in 26 weeks as we are now, all child benefit every month goes straight on bills and most of our weekly money goes on catalogues, we are having less than 50 pound to live off every week and that does not cover all living expenses, we are going hungry so our children can eat, any advice please thanks hayley x

The 26 week thing dates back to another benefit, but they kept it- have you applied for tax credits?

Your best bet would be to ask for a letter of entitelment regarding your I.S. and take that to your landlord/council as housing benefit ( rent) is a passported benefit, that you will get if on income support , and most landlords know this and are happy to wait.

Hi, please help!

My partner and I were on JSA (started claming about 7 or 8 weeks ago) and all went through. We then moved as a family member said they might have some work for us but that fell through so we are now back in the original place (living with my partner’s mum) and have re-claimed JSA which should be processed in 3-5 days from now (ish.) We have found a private landlord who is happy to take us providing we can get a deposit but the property is unfurnished. I’m wondering if we can apply for a crisis loan for the deposit and a budgeting loan for the furniture? If we dont pay the deposit asap we will lose the hosue. we were told during our interview that we could apply for both and thats what we were planning to do as soon as our JSA was confirmed but now I’ve seen the 26 weeks rule thing I’m really confused????

Please answer! Thanks so much

Social Fund September 30, 2011 at 6:47 am

Hi gemma,

To answer your questions:

1) JSA processing is behind nationally according to our source working closely with the DWP- so expect to wait at least 10 days from your interview for it to be sorted
2)Yes unfortunately 26 weeks on benefit is one of the qualifying conditions of a BL, so if you have closed your claim even for 1 day you have to start the clock again.
3) BE VERY CAREFUL about the terminology that you use when applying for a C/L for help with a new property- they will NEVER pay a DEPOSIT, BOND, or ADMIN FEES- they will only pay RENT IN ADVANCE.

Our advice would be to apply to your local council for help with the DEPOSIT, > apply to the C/L section for RENT IN ADVANCE, and separately apply for an ALIGNMENT TO BENEFIT, this will get you some money until your JSA is processed/paid.

Hope that helps, and feel free to ask any specific questions that you need clarifying.

Hi there and thank you for your quick response.

My partner and I are completely new to all of this so I’m sorry if my questions are silly. What is an alignment to benefit and how would we go about applying for this? We have now sent off our forms for a crisis loan – do you have any idea how long it takes to hear back from them as to whether the answer is positive or negative?

We are really panicking and just don’t know what to do. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks so much

How would I be able to apply for the money to get one? I dont think I can claim a budgeting loan as I have maxed out my limit. You can apply for a crisis loan,- they WILL refuse if your maxed out-BUT when they do refuse as for the application to be converted to a Community Care Grant

I had to borrow the £500 deposit from a family member but they have lost their job and need it urgently but I don’t has the money to pay them back. Applied for bank loans
Applied for a wage advance
Have no other way of getting money.

As your employed they will expect that you have other ways of getting money…

Apply just the same as normal, however expect to be told NO(50/50)…THEN ask for a review and at this stage they will investigate your ability to lend.

Unfortunately crisis loans are nit issued for housing costs other than rent in Advance when your moving. However, if you spent all your benefit on rent, then you could apply for a crisis loan for food/fuel …..

hi im 22, have a 16 month old daughter and im 23 weeks pregnant. both me & my partner are on a joint jsa claim. we privately rent a house but we’ve been having problems with the landlord not doing her job properly (its taken her 4 months to do 1 repair) & she constantly ignores us when we text or call her, we’ve even fixed one of the repairs to our home ourselves as we were fed up of waiting for her to sort it. we’ve found a new private rented property but the landlord wants 1 months rent in advance (£500). we already have 1 crisis loan that we are paying back at the moment (approx £170 left on it). the landlord says he wants us to move into the new property on the 5th november and pay the rent upfront then. i’ve handed in my notice to my current landlord (after being told by my local housing office that they would help me pay my rent upfront then being told they can’t do a thing for me!) so now i’m stuck with what to do because either way my landlord has recieved my notice and agreed that she wants me out by 5th november. what would my chances of getting a crisis loan for rent in advance be? thanks.

hi Jo,

Yes you have a good chance of getting a loan given what you have said. you have two choices.

1) apply right away in writing
2) wait till 3/11/12 and apply over the phone.

either way you may have to show a tenancy agreement, and that you are moving to overt a risk to your health and safety…

I have a 2 month old baby and am on JSA. I have been staying with my mother-in-law for 4 months however she has 3 sons and live in a 3 bed house. Her sons are 20, 18 and 13. I am staying in the back room with my baby and the room is like a box. It has no window and is extremely small and claustrophobic. I know this is not healthy for a growing baby. My mother-in-law keeps complaining that the house is overcrowded and told me to find somewhere for me and my baby. I have found a flat through an estate agent and have used my JSA to cover the deposit. Would I be able to get a crisis loan to cover the 1st months rent? I really need to move urgently.

Yes, assuming that you have not already exceeded your borrowing limit, and that the new loan would not take your total over £1500, then you should be able to get a loan by giving them a call

Hi, I wrote a while back about a budgeting loan/crisis loan and I appreciated your response. We applied for the crisis loan and sent it off on the 30th Sept and still we’ve heard nothing back. We are at our wits end and need help. They won’t give us a community care grant, they won’t give us a budgeting loan because we’ve not been on JSA for 26 weeks and there’s literally nothing else we can do for money to live. Do you have any idea as to whether we might hear soon or should we take the lack of response as a no?! Thank you.

Reply

Social Fund October 18, 2011 at 8:55 pm

Hi again Gemma,

No, don’t take the slow response as a “no” it takes them forever to decide!

Without asking you a load of personal questions ( financial) it would be difficult to give advice on other options.

Have you booked an appointment with citizens advice? They will know your area, and what help is available, and can also ask the questions that need to be asked to get a full idea of what to advise.

Hi Cheryl,

You could apply for an “Alignment to benefit” crisis loan, and the chances of you getting this are good as long as you have ALREADY asked the Inland revenue for an emergency payment. The tax credits section are notoriously late with payments, and as such you can GO IN and ask for a payment at your local tax office- if you are turned down ( not likely, but a lot of waiting around) then yes you may get a crisis loan over the phone..

I have already applied for incoming support but still waiting. I have already had 3 crisis loans not so long ago, I need food!

Can I still claim? Thanks Nick

Hi Nick,

You say that you have already claimed 3 times- there is now a limit to 3 claims in every 12 months, UNLESS your applications were due to non payment of benefit of a NEW CLAIM- this is then an alignment, and does not count- so you could apply again.

Hi, i have lived in the same place for 2 1/2 years, i do not work have two young children and receive housing benifit, My landlord has just issued me with re-posseion of the property as i owe money, i always thought housing benifit covered my whole rent, but it turns out i have been £75 short every month, would a crisis loan help me pay this back so i dont get evicted? Me and kids will have no where to go? Thank you

hi there, i lost my job due to transportation problems, ie my car broke down while i was homeless (in scotland they put homeless in b&b’s, very exspensive if your working, £255 a week) i got housed just after i lost my job so scrapped my car to pay for transporting my clothes and boxes of papers and personal items ie photos ect, i have been housed and its 10 miles away from my local job center, i have child maintanance of 20 a fortnight, thats £5 A WEEK PLUS £10 arrears fortnightly, my rent arrears from b&b is sat at -£2900, so i have to pay £10.20 a week too, so take that away from my £49 a week jsa, i have now been at this address for 2 months, i dont have no cooker, fridge, bed, carpets, bedding, washing machine, the list is endless, i still not put electric in my name as im affraid of finding out how much dept im gonna dig into, im currently on a waiting list for a personal social worker to help me out, im due to sign on at 11.20 this morning, and i have no choice but to walk 10 miles there, and 10 miles back, this will be the 3rd time i have walked to sign on, while im in the local town i look for jobs done at least 30+ apps and 4 replys saying thanks but no thanks, they wont help me on transportation, i have applied for an ccg, but no reply,
this is slowly getting me depressed as i cant afford a bus fare of £8.90 return, local shop is very exspensive (nica) there is no public communities where i live, so i cant get on internet, MY FRIEND HAS LENT ME HIS LAPTOP FOR 2 DAYS HENCE HOW I COMMENTED ON HERE!!! so im using it to apply for jobs online, but if im a lucky guy that finds a job i still have this problem with transportation!!
my last job still stands open for me as soon as i can be able to get there, (40 miles each way) coach driver,
i really dont know wat to do, im depressed and loosing the will to live like this, i really need help but no1 seems bothered,

He continues to apply for all sorts of work & as taken to walking to interviews even those that are 10/15 miles away.
He as extremly limited money on Gas & Eletric meters no food, no credit of his phone, no internet his sold anything of valve that he owns.
His appealled, applied for crisis & hardship loans and been refused all on the grounds of this santion
What can he or i do for him surely this can not be correct that their would willing allow a man to stave or freeze to death???
The last time he called them( on my phone) he was told to call the local charitys for food parcels …..He was no phone or internet how can he do this??

All help & advise greatly welcome

Strange- if he has no other means of support then hardship should be considered, additionally- if he has not already applied for 3 crisis loans since April 2011 then he may be able to get a crisis loan ( assuming he has not already borrowed £1500) AFTER the 14th day of his sanction , as the 1st 14 days he is entitled no NO help whatsoever

I have now ran out of money already and was wondering if i would qualify for a crisis loan to help with getting to and from work until my jsa gets processed. I have no other means of getting the lend of money and dont want to end up loosing my job if i dont have petrol to get there. Would i be entitled to a loan?

Sorry travel costs are not covered by a crisis loan BUT you can apply for a loan for food and ges/electric whilst your JSA claim is being processed- then its up to you what you spend it on….

The social fund will not replace income that is missing due to a sanction- otherwise it would make the sanction pointless

Hi,

I lost my job recently and applied for JSA again, I signed on on Monday (its a rapid reclaim) I currently have 2 slices of bread in my house and nothing else to eat. I was told that my JSA will not be through for around 14days. I have two dogs also who are getting low on food(although I know they are my responsibility-they still need to eat) Is it possible to call the crisis loan number and get a loan for food to tide me over until my JSA comes through? Would I get it same day considering I have no other food in my house and can not last 10 days with no food. Thanks.

Hi,

You can apply for an alignment to benefit- these are generally paid , as there is no reason not to. They are same day payments , and are designed to cover food and gas/electric

However my son is now 10 weeks and I am need of a 4th crisis loan as last week my employment and support allowance went on urgent bills. I was supposed to have a friend lend me money this week as she knew I would struggle but she has let me down. Is it possible for me to get a 4th loan today?

Reply

Social Fund November 16, 2011 at 11:43 am

Yes – the 3 loans in one year policy does not apply to alignment to benefit applications ( when your waiting for a new claim) so you should be fine to apply again.

Reply

blauren November 17, 2011 at 12:02 am

It wasn’t a complete new claim, my claim was made in march, I receive the first payment then they were reassesing it, to which I received no money for 6 weeks, hence 3 crisis loans.

Hi,

I have recently moved into a flat i am claiming ESA for both me and my husband. and waiting for councilt tax benefit and housing benefit to come through. The flat is compleatly unfurnished and the tennancy also states that we must carpet the flat. I have absolutley no spare money to furnish the flat or carpet it. I filled in a form i was given to apply for a loan (i think) which asked me to state what i needed and how much it cost. I took the compleated form to my local jobcentre who said they would send it on. It’s been a week now and i have not heard anything. :-(

Please can you offer me some advice. I’ve been employed part time and am now Being evicted from my current property with 2 weeks to find somewhere else to live.

I start a new job on Monday, won’t be paid for this until 2 days before Xmas, although they’re going to sub me £100 for travel costs for the month.

I need to come up with rent in advance & money to cover cost of a removal before 30th Nov & have exhausted all other options – nobody is able to help and as I’ve had poor credit in past and not currently full time employed I can’t get a loan. I’d need about £800 for rent in advance & living expenses until my payday.

Previously I’ve had two crisis loans – one for £60 and one for £30 which I’m still paying back.

Will the social fund be able to help me? I’m urgently viewing properties tomorrow and at the weekend – if I find a place do I need to take a signed tenancy agreement into the jobcentre before I can apply for rent in advance? Won’t the landlord want rent upfront before signing an agreement?

Plea

Hi kenny,

in this instance we have assumed furnishings to mean carpets, towels, bedding- additionally, families with children are treated differently as there may be a risk to a child’s health and safety if – say a carpet were not provided, and a toddler was having to crawl on bare concrete.

In theory you could make an application for anything, however the likelihood of applications being paid can differ immensely based on your personal circumstances.

In your original post, you seem to be a single guy- this is the group least likely to be paid in our experience.

Hi could you give me some advice please?
I’m a single adoptive mum on JSA(though it was suspended for a week in October) and I’m due to start work hopefully next week. I’m worried I won’t have any money to live on til I get paid my wage on the 23rd December. I spoke to my advisor at the job centre and he said I could claim and get like a wage in advance( i think he meant a crisis loan?) . Can you tell me what I’d need to do to get one? My advisor said I’d need a letter with my start date, normal weekly wage & hours, Date of first pay and amount and also the period that wage covers. I’ve asked my manager for this but he said this will need to come from HR and may take a while but he could send me my contract which would have my start date, pay and how many hours basic I’ll be doing(my contracted hours are 14 hours but I’ll be working 18 so prob not the actual hours i’ll be working til 23rd dec) on it. What have I to do?
Thanks for any help :)

The fact that I have never once in my life claimed JSA or housing benefit does that benifit my application at all?

I called up on Monday and this lady I spoke to was extremley rude, just basicly giving me a lecture on budgeting myself… I couldn’t go through with the application because the tone of voice she had didn’t sound like she was the slightest bit interested in helping me

I will apply right now over the phone anyway and try

In theory you can get a loan- however you need to be clear that you have tried all other means- I.e. asked the bank, asked family and asked your boss for an advance.. Make this clear in the first 3 minutes of your call, also make a point of asking the agents name and location..

Pat December 11, 2011 at 2:44 pm

I personally think the social fund will try everything they can not to help those who really need the help. I have been working since I was 17, had two jobs straight when I was still in school. I was lucky to get a well paying job and paid eye watering tax. 5 years down the line I have found myself in a very difficult position. I found myself living at home with my 2 year old. The agreement was I could stay until I pick myself up and I am due to start running my business in the new year. We have suddenly been asked to leave and find our own way. I do not have any savings or money to put down as rent in advance. I went to housing options who told me they had no housing yet but I could go to the job centre and ask for a crisis loan and ask private landlords if they will accept HB in the mean time. This was on Monday and we were due to move out on Friday. I was advised the application takes two days from Monday, filled if in sent it off. Called them on weds to ask about my phone, they didn’t have it. Advised to make a phone application if I needed the money in the next 48 hrs. After getting through more than 4 times and told to ring the potential landlord for more info then call back, I managed to speak to this extremely rude man(the phone only gets answered after you wait for 12 minutes, all the calls I made to them were answered after 12 mins..). He spoke over me, did not let me finish explain or give an answer and down right called me a liar! He said January was not too far off even if my son and I became homeless as that is when I am supposed to get funds released for my new business. Even though the first time I heard of this crisis loan was on monday, he said I had had enough time to send a paper application and sort out my housing. I told him I did and I was told they did not get it, and was advised to take this route. He said I was lying, decided there was no danger to our safety or health(we have no money and have no choice but leave where we are staying, out in the freezing cold) and declined my application, even dared me to appeal against his decision. I felt so humiliated and upset I was left in tears as I did not know what to do next. i went to the jobcentre, wrote my review/appeal and the nice lady there asked me to fill out another application which she would fax over. I called them after some time and they said because the other phone application was declined the fax application would be treated as a duplicate and declined too. So I have to go back for the review on Monday. In the mean time,we are living rough. I can go home when no one is there, change clothes and find something to eat as I do not even have £5 to my name right now. I thought these funds were there to help people in need not treat people like classless dirt and humiliate them. I certainly never thought I could find myself in such a situation. If by monday they still say no, they can just keep their money and any benefits they give, we will try and find our own way and get back on my feet instead of been made to feel like scum because you are in need.

Social Fund December 15, 2011 at 7:24 pm

its the same fund- so if your already at the limit on budgeting loans, you won’t get a crisis loan.

can anyone help? i am on income support at the minute and i took out a budgeting loan around 8 months ago. I pay it back every week and it is due to be paid off next year. My flat only has storage heaters which are extremely expensive! With one heater on upstairs and one on downstairs for 2 days it cost £17 electric! would i be qualified for a crisis loan, or any other form of loan from the job centre to tide me over the cold winter period! was hoping i could put the majority on my electric and also buy a new gas bottle for my heater. My house is really cold and with a 3year old i have to make her sleep in her dressing gown and many blankets. My bedrooms are attic converted so you can imagine they are alot colder than most. I dont have double glazing either and there is a gap at the top of my front door! can anyone advise me? thanks x

Try applying to your local council regarding insulation/draft proofing- and apply for a ccg/bl for help with heating

I am homeless, but work fulltime, I am signed off work with depression too, I phoned for a crisis loan as have no money left for food, wages got eaten by cash genie who took 700 out of my account to cover a debt, I havent eaten for three days now, and am sleeping rough, they turned me down, because i have a phone contract, the woman said if i have a contract it must mean my credit rating is ok and i could get money, I have tried loans everywhere, am 2000 down at the bank, i cant get anything.
All i can do now is hand write an appeal, I pay my taxes, and when i most need help they say no.

they deserve the treatment and care they get on them wards. You im afraid are paying nothing in to the system but arragance and pure stupidity and selfishness, your a nasty person, who if i had half a chance would slap your silly face.

Yes you can apply, so long as you have not already applied 3 times since April 2011 and that you don’t already owe too much- you will need to find a place first, and should get a decision during the call.

Hi,
Wondering if anyone can help me. I had to give up my job in August due to an illness developing after having my 2nd child in Jan. My partner was made redundant and we had to apply for JSA and housing benefit. I seperated from my partner in october due to the stress of us both losing our jobs and had to reapply for everything as a single parent. I reapplied for housing benefit in november and I’ve still heard nothing about my claim. I was told at first it was just a change of circumstances and that it wouldn’t take long, was then informed that I had to make a whole new claim as my expartner was the main claimant. I’ve tried contacting the council to find out what is going on, but due to the festive period they have been closed for the past 2 weeks. Would I be able to get a crisis loan to cover my rent? I am now 2 months in arrears due to the council giving me false information and my landlord is starting to get impatient. I have 2 young children under 4 and really dont want to be evicted due to the incompitence of my local councils office staff. Can anyone offer some advice??

Reply

Social Fund January 4, 2012 at 10:23 pm

Sorry to hear about your situation.

Unfortunately the social fund will not pay crisis loans for back rent, however once your claim to JSA is processed you can take your entitlement letter to your council

just trying to be a helpful person :) January 6, 2012 at 7:09 pm

I think this website is absolutely so helpful, thank you very much for all of the hard work you guys do, even over the holidays!

Just wanted to say, as help to anyone needing rent in advance. I followed all of your steps for a successful application, but just wanted to give one more piece of advice to add to yours (I didnt see it anywhere else on the page), and just ‘FYI’

Okay, basically, to get a Rent In Advance decision over the phone you have to call up 48 hours before being evicted on the normal Crisis Loan number, but instead of telling them it is for rent in advance, you tell them it is for living expenses, then once you are through to the person who will be taking your claim, you then tell them it is for rent in advance. That way the decision will be made over the phone immediately.

I was advised this by the operator when I first called them, so it is all above board, and it is what they would like you to do.

I really do hope this information helps someone who is in a tight position this year, this website really does paint some horror stories.

Hope everyone has a peaceful and prosperous new year, including you website guys :)

Hi, wonder if you could help me?

I am on income support ( long term sick and disabled rate) have been for a few years, I am a council tenant therefore housing benefit etc gets awarded through my circumstances.

I still have one of my children living at home with me, he is 23, he had 2-3yrs at college untl last year, then went on to claim JSA unfortunately he suffers severe psoriasis so he was transferred to ESA, had the medical, ws declared fit for work, i appealed the decision, the appeal was heard beginning december, but due to the xmas season and all, the outcome of the appeal and all paperwork got delayed getting through to us until only last week that his ESA was disallowed, He has made a fresh claim for JSA and his interview is not until end of next week, I got my fortnightly IS last week, which i have managed to stretch out between the both of us for food and some bills.

Unfortunately it is both key meters I have for my gas and electric and they are just about out of emergency credit, I am planning on asking for a crisis loan but do I ask for it on my behalf or on my son’s?

Thank you for your time with this query.

Simple Question Could my partner get her rent in advance paid even though she is a part time working mum of 2 claiming CTC (Child tax credits) and also WTC (Working Tax credits) as she has to find another house for her and her 2 children because her current tenancy is coming to an end (end of next month). She can not get any loans from either the bank or family. I have even asked my family and they are strapped for cash since they have just moved house. She only has enough spare money to pay for the deposit but not the 1st months rent. I can not help her out with any money as I am un-employed and the money I have goes to the children. She maxed her credit card when moving to her current address and as there is limited landlords taking dss it is hard for us to live together with out it affecting our incomes as I would lose my jsa if she was to live with me or vice versa

For the past 6 months I moved from IS to ESA, but it is still in appeal, due to admin errors ect my certificates get sent to the wrong departments, thus I am left with no payment when payment is due. I have had 3 Crisis loans, 2 of them were normal crisis loans but the 3rd was an alignment to benefit, I have been told because electricity was taken into account in he calculation I am not able to apply for another loan, even when reviewed. I was told the 3rd loan would not count as it was in payment but not being paid. I am confused can I get another loan till they find my certificate, or am I stuck?

you can only get an alignment win your benefit is being processed at the new claim stage..

Hello

I am 24 years old rent off a private landlord for £636 a month and I am not able to pay rent/ pay back money that has been lent to me to purchase furniture for my room, or pay off a or travel or any other immediate needs. I have applied for JSA and Housing Benefit but I a still awaiting a decision and neither will arrive before the due date for my rent.

If I a unable to pay I will be evicted and be made homeless.

Am I able to apply for financial help and if so which.

Many thanks.

You are able to apply for a Crisis loan for your immediate living needs- the rent is something that is not covered, however Housing benefit should backdate.

Hi
I was wondering if we are entitled for the crisis loan? My hubby is full time working from last 3 months but 2010/2011 were very, very bad for us. Paying back lots of debts and hardly got any many to feed 4 of us ( usually 50£ for all of us). We need to leave temp. accommodation ( 1 bedroom in sheared house and me, my hubby 14 years old and 1,5 daughters). Don’t know what to do? Need asap money towards deposit and monthly rent in advance but got no help at all. We’ve been trying to deal with the situation but got no idea what to do now. From Monday we are going to be homeless. We are not claiming any of the benefits.

You can apply for a crisis loan, however as your hubby is in F/T work you will have to answer additional questions around why you can’t get a loan elsewhere

Hi,

I was wondering whether I qualify for a crisis loan.
I recently moved to the UK (3 months ago) and I am self-employed as a freelance translator. Unfortunately, the client I worked for the month before I moved here (usually you have to wait up to 60 days before you get paid for the job you did) turned out to be a scam. He scammed me for over 15oo pounds and, since I wasn’t able to work much because of the move, I am basically down to not having money to eat. I have spent everything that I have to have some food and I am basically living on toasted bread without anything.. I am working a lot to make up for the loss, but I always need to wait at least 30 days to get paid. I also got a council tax bill that I really can’t pay at this moment and rent is becoming difficult as well.

Can you please advise me about this?
Thank you so much in advance!

Kind regards,

Hey, i moved into my 2 bed flat with my partner and little boy 18months ago, we were both working part time but then my partner was unfortunately made redundant so i began full time work to cover the costs of bills e.t.c, my partner found several part time – short contract jobs which was fine at the time but obviously they ended. He has just found a new permanent 4 day a week job and i have given up mine to spend more time with my little boy and im starting college in september. Our only problem is dues to everything constantly changing since we moved in ( wages, tax credits, housing benefit e.t.c ) we have never had a consistant similar amount of money for more than a couple months at a time and have fallen into arreas of about £1000 in utility bills, i already have a bank loan which i cant get extended that i taken out 4 months ago as we needed new appliances, and my partner has a relatively bad credit history and gets declined credit everywhere. I was just wondering if i would be eligible for a crisis loan? I hate constantly having letters through for bills that i just cant afford to pay at the moment and would love to be able to pay them off and start off on top of things again. many thanks

Would it be possible to get a crisis loan to tide me over, or is there another form of payment im eligible for?

Any advise on what to do next would be great thank you very much

Hi,

Jobseekers have messed up my switching from cont.based JSA to I.B JSA, it’s been almostr 8 weeks since I had a payment now. Housing benefit over paid me a while back and have taken a large lump from my pyament. My rent is now due, the landlord is pestering for it, and I can not pay anywhere near what I need to. I have no money for gas, electric or food or to pay my council tax. I also have to move in a couple of weeks and have no money for removal expenses. Can I get a crisis loan over the telephone to help as I need to pay the rent and council tax, and buy gas, electric and food urgently.

U can get a payment for GAS and electric and food I tend to claim £20 for gas £20 Elec and £60 food when JC messes up, that tides me over, as for rent in advance I think u can get help if you get a letter from Landlord or council

Reply

Social Fund February 15, 2012 at 10:22 pm

Hi,

this has always been a grey issue… ordinarily large bills are not covered by crisis loans- however if you get a reasonable decision maker, and can convince them that heating oil is akin to money for an electric/gas meter, then you should have a good chance of getting it paid.

Make sure you have all the facts to hand:
Price
Supplier
Amount..

Once you have to payment it is yours to do with as you wish, however applying for further furnishings in the future may be problematic (sorry for any typo’s- we tend to reply using mobiles as we have no office, and try to answer ASAP rather then waiting to get back to a PC)
